Filler

What

Dermal fillers are injectable substances that are used to restore volume and fullness to the face, as well as to smooth out wrinkles and fine lines. They are made of various materials, such as hyaluronic acid, calcium hydroxylapatite, poly-L-lactic acid, and polymethylmethacrylate.

How

When injected into the skin, dermal fillers work by attracting water to the treated area and plumping up the skin. They can be used to fill in wrinkles and fine lines, enhance facial contours, and restore volume to areas of the face that have lost fullness due to aging or weight loss.

When

Before the procedure, you will typically have a consultation to evaluate your skin and discuss your goals and expectations. The area to be treated will be cleaned and prepped with an antiseptic solution. A numbing cream or local anesthetic may be used to help minimize discomfort. The filler will be injected into the skin using a small needle. After the injection, the healthcare professional may massage the area to help distribute the filler evenly.

Pre-treatment

  • Schedule your Filler appointment at least 4 weeks prior to a special event, such as a wedding or a vacation to allow for complete healing.

  • Results will take approximately 7 to 14 days to appear. Also bruising and swelling may be apparent in that time period.

  • Avoid blood thinners prior to treatment. Patients that bruise easily or take blood thinners may take longer to heal. Please be patient.

  • Do not consume alcoholic beverages at least 24 hours prior to treatment (alcohol may cause bruising).

  • To minimize the risk of bruising you may take Arnica or Bromelain.

Post-Treatment

  • Avoid significant movement or massage of the treated area. Unless instructed by the provider.

  • Avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours.

  • Avoid consuming excess amounts of alcohol or salts to avoid excess swelling for 24 hours.

  • Please apply cool compresses or ice packs for 20 minutes each hour, the first few hours after treatment (while awake). This will help minimize swelling.

  • Use Tylenol for discomfort, this will also minimize swelling.

  • Try to sleep face up and slightly elevated if you experience swelling.

  • Take Arnica to help the bruising and swelling. This may be started the day of surgery 3-4 times a day for 4 days. Arnica, is not necessary for healing. This option is elective.
